A Brief History of Betta

Filed under: Betta History — henryteo @ 5:00 am

The common name for betta is Siam Fighting Fish. Siam is the traditional name for Thailand. There are many species of betta , the most common is Betta Splendens. Betta is native to Thailand and is found in many other parts of Asia as well , namely Vietnam , Cambodia and Malaysia.

Betta is a labyrinth because it breathes oxygen from the air. Bettas are found in shallow waters in paddy fields or small rivers. It is aggressive and territorial by nature. In the wild betta feed on mainly mosquito larvae and worms.

In many parts of Asia many people still use them to fight for bets and it is one of the favorite past time. Through selective breeding and genetics development , today we are seeing more varieties in finnage and colors of bettas. Halfmoon and plakat bettas are increasingly becoming one of the favorite aquarium fish pets.

Maintenance of betta fish is rather easy as there is no necessity for aeration or filteration in the betta tank.

Other than the vibrant color and beautiful finnage , I particularly like to watch the flaring of betta. That is a real enjoyment. Bubblenest building is also another spectacular sight you should not miss …

As I write this betta blog , it really brings back a lot of memories of my childhood days …
